Even rarer than alexandrite, demandtoid garnet is a brilliant green gem that dances with fire like a diamond.
Because its original mine only produces a small trickle of the gem, and mines from other sites in the world tend to contain a lower grade yellowish-green gem, quality demantoid garnet is almost never found in sizes above a carat or two.
Gems of Russian origins are generally valued more highly than gems from other mines. Occasionally, a piece of demantoid garnet will include a beautiful asbestos inclusion that looks like the tail of a horse.
These “horse-tail” demantoid garnets are particularly valued by collectors, and produce one instance where inclusions increase rather than decrease the quality of a gemstone.
